A New Tradition

As my siblings and I are all getting older, married, and spread out, it is harder and harder to coordinate our schedules to all be home at the same time.  I’m sure many of you can relate.  Our solution: A new Memorial Day weekend tradition of family vacation.  Each year a different couple will choose the destination.

My parents started us off this year and lined up a camping trip to Robber’s Cave State Park near McCallister, Oklahoma.  They rented an RV and picked up the ‘kids’ that lived along the way.  Unfortunately Tommy and I live on the wrong side of Oklahoma and drove to meet up with everyone else.  On our little drive, it was quickly discovered that Tone-deaf Karaoke is a wonderful way to pass the time.  I’m just glad it was a small audience, 😉robberscavestateparkOnce we got to the campsite, we set up tents {for those of us ‘real’ campers}, hammocks, built a fire, and began to explore.  Our weekend was filled with hiking, pedal boating, putt-putt golf, badminton, sno-cones, s’mores, more hiking, laughing, eating, and just straight up family time.  We soaked up lots of fresh air, sunshine, bugs, and God’s beautiful creation and nature.tenthikingOf course we had plenty of entertainment from my nephew as well, who lacks no imagination.  According to him we hiked through the rain-forest, explored dark scary caves, listened to Toucans and Parrots, and were surrounded by Totem Poles.  The kid really couldn’t get enough hiking and would go out of his way off the trail just to step over a bigger tree or rock.  He loved going down to the stream and was so completely fearless.  We even got a little concert out of him at the Amphitheater found at the State Park.2013-05-26 18.32.07-1By the end of the weekend we were definitely dirty, a little sun burnt, and tired.  But I think I can probably speak for all of us in saying that it was such a refreshing time to all be together as a family laughing and making memories.  I’m a huge fan of this new tradition of a family vacation and am already looking forward to next year.  I’m so thankful for each of my family members and feel so blessed that we are all so close and can enjoy time together.
